“Eleonora Moro, who died on July 18 aged 94, came to international prominence with the kidnap by Red Brigades terrorists of her husband, the former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro, for whose freedom she fought fiercely and whose death she blamed on the intransigence of his Christian Democrat Party colleagues.”
“During the 55 days of her husband’s captivity she battled with the government, headed by Giulio Andreotti, and with Moro’s party colleagues, in an unsuccessful bid to overturn their refusal to negotiate for his release.”
“Her own efforts to establish contact with the Red Brigades – through a Swiss lawyer, the International Red Cross and the Vatican – were thwarted by the Italian government.”
“Her husband could have been found, she told the Rome court, “if things had been done with the common sense of a housewife”.”
“Not only was Eleonora Moro convinced that her husband had been betrayed by representatives of the state and of his own party but she also believed that international forces had an interest in his elimination. Her husband had been specifically warned against pursuing his policy of accommodation with the communists by the US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger. “I will try and recall the exact words that my husband related to me,” she told the Rome court. “He said that Kissinger had warned him heavily: either you stop courting the communists or you will pay dearly for it.””
